This was a weekend where it wasn't in your favor to be in the top two in the Summit Series Point's Race. In the Sportsman, Pro and Super Pro classes, the top two racers in all three classes were loading their cars after the first round came to an end. With only two points races left in the season and the top four racers from each class making the Race of Champions race at the Division finals in October, the group of racers that have a shot at this is starting to bunch up.
$5 Friday
Semi’s: Dave DuBose advanced to yet another Jackpot final round when Tommy Brown missed on the tree and went big time red. Kim Arns had the single.
Finals: This battle was won at the starting line as Arns was late on the tree and DuBose ran a 12.512 [12.49 dial].
Junior Consolation
Semi’s: Gabrielle Silva got the victory when Kurtis Roberts had vehicle issues and couldn’t complete the run. Jessica Trimmer left too early to give Austin Jones the pass into the final.
Finals: Silva pushed too hard on the tree causing the big red tilt light to come on. This was too bad because both drivers had their cars dialed in and it would have been a very close race. Jones ran a 12.298 [12.30 dial] to Silva’s 8.185 [8.18 dial].
Junior Series
Semi’s: This semifinal match up paired Shawn Chase (#1 in points) with Amber Whooley (#2 in points). Chase had been having issues with inconsistent reaction times all day and this round was no exception. Chase gave the race away on the starting line as he was way late, posting a .122 to Whooley’s .059. Kyla Morris had the single.
Finals: Amber Whooley broke out running a 9.899 [9.90 dial] to give Kyla Morris her first win of the season. The win puts Whooley 33 points out of first place with two races left. [Point’s Leader: Shawn Chase +33].
Summit Series High School
Finals: Lacie Roumpz chalks up another win. [Points Leader: Lacie Roumpz +440]
Summit Series Sportsman
National Dragster Challenge
Semi’s: Eric Setterberg gets the award for the worst light of the night as he leaves the line with a .542 [.000 is perfect] reaction time to give part time racer Bob Thomas a pass to the final round. Jim Crowe gave Tami Phillips the win when he went red by -.078.
Finals: Thompson left with a .041 reaction time and ran a 13.573 [13.50 dial] to better Phillip’s .157 reaction time and run of 13.318 [13.27 dial] and take home his first ever Wally. [Points Leader: Stan Hooper Sr +44]
Summit Series Pro
National Dragster Challenge
Semi’s: In a very close race, Kyle Morris got the win light by running a 10.774 [10.75 dial] to Jim Beller’s right on 10.847 [10.84 dial]. Morris had the better reaction time, a .098 to Beller’s .130. Brian Costello had the single.
Finals: Costello throws down a .002 reaction time and then runs right on his dial to take down Morris. Morris took the stripe first, but broke out as he was .029 slower than Costello at the start. [Points Leader: Jim Grace +129].
Summit Series Super Pro
National Dragster Challenge
Semi’s: Cecil Wiles Jr, trying to match his dad’s performance from the previous race, paired up with John Garafolla who was on a hot streak. Wiles had the advantage at the start, a .034 to a .082, but Wiles went too fast by .004 to give Garafolla a shot at the Wally. Dave Whooley had the single.
Finals: In a double break out race, Garafolla started with a .004 to Whooleys .023 reaction time. On the top end Whooley was too fast by the least to take the win with a margin of victory of .0013. The win helped Whooley move into third place in the points. [Points Leader: Lonnie Grace +44].
